MESS
MESS (Mull and Iona Environmentally Sensitive Solutions) is a community initiative that provides local solutions to the waste and environmental issues that affect our communities, and brings economic as well as environmental benefits to Mull andIona.
Since MESS was established by the Mull and Iona Community Trust in 2002, it has gone from strength to strength and now employs 1 full time and 3 part time staff as well as providing volunteering opportunities.
Island Castaway's Craignure
MESS activities now extend to –
- Operating two charity shops, Island Castaways, in Craignure and Bunessan providing an outlet for reuse items as an alternative to landfill
Recycling
- Funds raised through the charity shops are distributed back to the community, to date we have donated back over £20,000 to over 50 local groups
- A business collection service for cans and plastic bottles
- Operating an Eco-Charter scheme to promote environmentally sensitive business practises
- Producing bio-diesel from used cooking oil for running our van
- Encouraging residents to go ’bag-free’ by distributing a free re-usable jute bag to every household
MESS distributes a free re-useable Jute Bag to every household
