Conservation Heritage

2/3 of the area of Mull and Iona and thus the area that the Ranger Service covers, have a landscape, bio-diversity or heritage designation. These designations may be Special Protection Areas, National Scenic Area or Sites of Special Scientific Interest or Scheduled or Unscheduled Ancient Monuments, for example http://gateway.snh.gov.uk/sitelink/index.jsp and http://www.rcahms.gov.uk/canmore.html

Due to the unspoiled nature of Mull and Iona, the islands can offer the wildlife enthusiast many of Scotland’s iconic species and is the best place to see white-tailed sea eagles and golden eagles in the UK. Other key species to see are red deer, otters, many different raptors, dolphins, porpoises and whales.

Mink Trapping on Mull and Iona.

The Ranger Service helps to manage a mink trapping project over the island and has about 50 volunteers. If you are interested in helping protect Mull’s ground nesting birds, give the Ranger Service a call and equipment and training will be provided.
