The Argyll Islands Native Woodland
Partnership aims to expand and enhance native woodlands in the
region; securing maximum social, economic and environmental
benefits.
Native woodlands on the Argyll Atlantic islands are of international
importance for rare and protected species. Many are remnants
of very ancient woodlands that have existed since the retreat
of the last ice age. They are in serious decline, because they
are not able to regenerate. As the current generation of mature
trees dies, the seed source is lost, and they may never return
again.
Working to improve the management
of these woodlands, and enhance forest habitat networks through
expansion will secure their future. It also offers opportunities
for employment: producing food and timber, reducing costs for
farms and homes, mitigating climate change, and boosting recreation
and eco-tourism.
