Powerdown

Powerdown Project LogoCommunity Powerdown is a project, starting in 2009, across twenty-four Communities in Scotland. Funded by the Climate Challenge Fund and co-ordinated by Community Energy Scotland the various Community projects are aimed at reducing carbon emissions.

Mull Renewables were granted funding for a Community Powerdown Officer. The goals were centred on offering advice to householders and Community Groups on reducing energy consumption and potential use of renewable heating and power generation.

Through events and visits to existing renewable installations on Mull, knowledge and experience has been shared between suppliers, users and potential users.

A Home Survey, investigating levels of insulation, property types, heating systems and energy spend provided a better understanding of the challenges faced by island households. This information was fundamental to gaining additional funding and persuading other groups, such as the Energy Savings Trust, to assist with getting home insulation upgraded. This led to the initiation of the Insulation Project.

Community Generation is the possibility of building Community owned power generation assets to reduce the Islands carbon footprint and generating profits that can be reinvested into the Community. This Community concern led to funding for investigations in to potential hydro-electricity and wind generation sites.

Other initiatives, such as loan of energy monitors, thermal imaging surveys and help with draught proofing have benefited many residents on Mull and Iona.
