What is it
about?
Giving someone a lift in our car is
something a lot of us are doing already. Frequently that occurs
on a spontaneous basis. But it happens just as often that we
realize too late that we could have either gone with someone
or given someone a lift.
Sharing lifts is not only good for the
environment, but it also helps to save money. For drivers it
is an easy way of helping someone, who will probably really
appreciate it.
The Sunday car share scheme is about making
the connection between drivers and people looking for a lift.
At the moment the scheme is limited to Sundays, because there
are no buses on that day in winter. However, if it works out
on Sundays, there is no reason why it couldn't be extended to
complement the bus service on other days as well.
Currently there are two possible ways of either offering a lift,
or looking for a lift:
Through a mailing list (e-mail):
If you are looking for a lift: e-mail
Gillian Cummins or telephone her on 01681 700677. She will send
an e-mail to a list of people who are in principle willing to
take someone if they are going somewhere anyway.
If you are happy to give someone a lift: become part of the
mailing list and receive information about people looking for
a lift.
Through a notice board in the Ferry
Shop in Fionnphort:
If you are looking for a lift: write down your contact details
and when you would like to go where.
If you are offering a lift: write down your contact details
and when you are going where
What about payment?
There is no official payment to the driver this would
incur insurance issues. However, if the person receiving a lift
wants to offer an informal donation towards petrol, thats
not a problem, and is entirely up to the individual people involved
on each occasion.
PS: Whose idea was it?
The idea of a lift or car sharing scheme emerged at a meeting
of a small group of people on a cold and rainy evening in November.
The group consisted of Gillian Cummins, Ali Holmes, Andrea Hauer,
Anne Baxter, Elizabeth Bland and Derek Crook.
The
Car Share Scheme acknowledges assistance from Mull Eagle Watch.
